MEDITATION AND VISUALISATION

WHAT IS MEDITATION?

Meditation can be defined as any activity that keeps our attention pleasantly anchored in the present moment and our mind fully engaged in what we are doing.

When the mind is calm and focused in the present, the mind is just being.  This is the meditative state that elicits the relaxation response.  It is peace.  This peaceful state is always present, however we cannot access it while the mind is busy.

When the mind is filled with unwanted feelings, thoughts and emotions which may produce stress, emotional reactions and  anxiety, it is difficult to clearly see the cause of problems or their answers.  Once the mind is still, these answers become apparent.

A few moments of meditating is a useful tool for focusing the mind.  The best way to begin is to simply focus completely on breathing.  This stills the mind and eliminates clutter.

Visualisation, together with Breathing and Relaxation Techniques is  a very effective tool to use to help you to achieve your goals, or just relax.  In a therapy session, it can be even more effective when used in conjunction with holding acupoints or ESR (Emotional Stress Release) points, helping to create, enhance and integrate positive change on many levels.  It will also provide you with techniques that you can use on a day to day basis following the session, for support and ongoing growth.

Meditation is not usually used in a therapy session, however it can be incorporated if you would benefit from learning these techniques.  One-to-one meditation sessions can be arranged.

More and more doctors are recognising the benefits of  meditation as a way to lower blood pressure, improve exercise performance in people with angina, help people with asthma breathe easier, reduce insomnia and relieve the everyday stresses of life.

In addition, by quieting the mind, meditation can also put one in touch with the inner physician, allowing the body's own inner wisdom to be heard.

Studies have shown that during meditation, the body attains a state of profound rest, with a decrease in heart rate and chemicals in the body which cause stress.  At the same time, the brain and mind become more alert, indicating a state of restful alertness. After meditation, reactions are faster, creativity greater, and comprehension broader.

Meditation is simple to learn and will help you to achieve a feeling of peace, harmony and contentment.
